Pompeii ruins.
One of the famous Pompeii plaster casts. These were made as they excavated the volcanic ash deposits last century. After the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, bodies buried in the pyroclastic flows decayed, leaving cavities in the ash. These casts were made by pouring plaster into the cavities. Many of them died instantly, and the positions of their bodies revealed in the casts show the terror of their final moments.
